Whatâs this, then?Itâs the latest Volkswagen California. It couldnât be much different to its Ferrari-made namesake, being, yâknow, a diesel-powered campervan. Itâs arguably more of a hero than the Fezza, though, laser-guided at its target audience with a truly precise purpose and exceedingly clever - Page continues belowVan-based campers are available in all shapes and sizes, of course, but VW boasts that the Cali is the only one with its kitchen and bedrooms built in from birth in the factory, rather than afterwards via a third-party company. It also has some unbeatable heritage, tracing its roots back to those classic 21-window VW Campers of the whatâs new?Essentially the California has been updated because the van upon which itâs based â VWâs Transporter â has just reached its sixth generation. Naturally, thereâs not been much change in the way of design, with fancier headlights and some braver colour schemes about the sum of news lies beneath the Cali's boxy exterior. Three engines are available, all of them 2-litre turbodiesels, in 100bhp, 148bhp and 201bhp flavours. The more powerful two offer four-wheel drive and a DSG automatic gearbox among their - Page continues belowThe Cali blurs the lines between car and van better than ever before, too, with all manner of technology available, including a big posh stereo, adaptive suspension, active cruise control and modern safety stuff like blind spot monitoring. Those with a limitless budget can craft a upmarket hotel room on wheels. Thereâs even Apple about the campy stuff? In the UK there are two trim levels available, Beach and Ocean. The former offers five or seven seats, and comes with two double beds: one downstairs, when the seats are folded down, and one in the elevating roof you see in the pictures. Itâs a cosy nightâs sleep, too, with a heating system on board for colder an Ocean and you get the same amount of bedding but just four seats, the others elbowed out by a kitchenette (two hobs, a sink and fridge) and an assortment of cupboards. You also get mildly plusher interior trim, while the upstairs bedroom unfurls all the latest news, reviews and exclusives, direct to your start at ÂŁ37,657 for a 100bhp Beach, rising to ÂŁ54,975 for a 201bhp Cali Ocean with four-wheel drive and / 6Thatâs a couple of decadesâ of holidays abroadâŠIndeed it is. But the Cali is as much a rival for 20 fortnights in Mallorca as it is the Porsche Boxster with which its prices you buy one of these because you want the flexibility of throwing a bunch of stuff in it and just going somewhere, quite probably at the drop of a Goretex hat and with some sort of lifestyle equipment attached to the California is so much more palatable than a motorhome, or the dreaded caravan. Itâs more appropriate on single-carriageway roads on bank holiday weekends, for starters, but itâs also so, so easy to not going to talk about actual handling, are you?Maybe a little. The truth is the Cali grips well and doesnât roll anywhere near as much as you might think, so cornering speeds will be dictated by how much you value the crockery in the cupboards, not its dynamic ability. And the driving position isnât quite as stoically upright as its van roots might have you fearing. Sensors and a camera can ease any parking performance? While the entry-level engine is predictably the running cost champion with a combined its 0-62mph time doesnât lie. With tonnes to shift when empty, itâs slow, and fully loaded itâll require some proper pedalling up better choosing one of the other engines: the 148bhp tune, a little over two grand more, is more than game enough, and uses barely any less gearboxes operate slickly, while front-driven Calis donât feel any harder work on road than those with 4Motion, so the rest of the spec depends on how easy-going you like your journeys between campsites, and how off-piste those sites actually probably buy the Beach and a portable stove for maximum flexibility, too. Get a seven seater and a pop-up tent for extra passengers and youâve probably rinsed every last drop of practicality from an already quite able âcarâ.So is the California still a TG hero?Unquestionably. No change was strictly needed, in truth, so instead VW has focused on further rounding off the sharp, van-based edges and created an even more car-like experience. Itâs a doddle to drive and a joy to explore its various nooks and crannies, such as the fold-out picnic table and chairs hidden in the door a Cali didnât make sense to you before, it still wonât. But for those who get it, this is (unless Mercedes brings its Marco Polo to Britain) as petrolhead-friendly as campervanning gets. Several members of the TG office have a rather bluff, boxy space in the lottery-win garage for one. Do you?
and in our Ocean all that lot is either built in or fits in the kitchen cupboards, leaving the space under the rear shelf empty.. I very much doubt you could fit even half of all the detritus we ship about in our crates in the Oceanâs cupboards and wardrobe.
T6.1 Ocean 150. Feb 7, 2020. #3. Gelato said: Just been to a dealer seen a California in the two tone Bay Leaf Green, really like the colour combination. Sales person pointed out a couple of concerns about the finish and where the green colour stopped and you can see the white paint, he thought a wrap would be just as good and cheaper. NeverAug 30, 2019 at 10:36am ET Itâs not a stretch to say Volkswagen started the whole camper van movement with its classic Type 2 way back in the 1950s. Flash forward to 2019 â VW has a new cool mini motorhome that will make its public debut at this yearâs 2019 Caravan Salon. Rather, itâs sort of new, as itâs based on the familiar California that already has camping provisions. This one is a bit different, however, in that it gets its own mini-kitchen along with seating for seven. Camping The VW Way: Officially called the California itâs a product of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles and in ordinary life, it functions as a normal van with seating for up to seven people. However, this version offers something new compared to other California campers â the ability to add the mini-kitchen without ditching the extra seating. In that sense, this van becomes a proper family vehicle through the week, with the ability to embrace off-grid life on the weekends. Gallery: Volkswagen California Beach The mini-kitchen stows behind the driver seat between the B and C pillars, and includes a single gas burner with a small workspace to the right. When not in use, the mini kitchen fits neatly into the vanâs wall. In its stowed configuration, it takes up no more passenger space than a standard California without the option. As for other camping items, the California features a pop-up aluminum roof with canvas sides, a roof bed, a fold-away table, and the rear bench seat folds to create another sleeping area. Despite its American-sounding name. VW doesnât offer the California in the States. Itâs presently the exclusive domain of overseas markets, though we suspect there are all kinds of VW camping enthusiasts hoping that it will eventually cross the pond. In the meantime, it will be on display starting August 31 at the 2019 Caravan Salon in Dusseldorf, Germany. Source: Volkswagen Hide press release Show press release Caravan Salon 2019: world premiĂšre of the California Beach with new mini kitchen Hannover, 29 August 2019 â Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is presenting a further surprise as part of the world premiĂšre of the new California at the Caravan Salon in Dusseldorf (31 Aug. to 8 Sept.): for the first time the entry-level Beach version will have a kitchen. Until now this was reserved for the more exclusive Coast and Ocean lines. New this time: unlike the large row of kitchen units in the Coast and Ocean, being used in the Beach is a completely reworked fold-out mini kitchen. While, due to the broader kitchen, the Coast and Ocean are universally offered with a two-seater bench in the passenger compartment, the California Beach can, thanks to the narrower mini kitchen, also optionally be ordered with a three-seater bench. That opens up the possibility for the first time for families of five to go camping with a California, complete with kitchen on board. The new California Beach with mini kitchen and motorhome type approval is being given the suffix âCamperâ; the Beach version with passenger car type approval and no mini kitchen will from now on carry the extra name âTourâ. New on the Tour: in future it is getting two sliding doors as standard â on the left and right. Previously the Beach was available with the sliding door on the right only. Both Beach versions â Tour and Camper â are additionally united by the fact that a new digital camper control unit in the roof console adds to the standard specification (for the previous model there was no camper control unit). For the first time it is also possible for both models to order hydraulic operation of the pop-up roof as an option instead of manual operation. In this case, the opening and closing of the roof is controlled, like many other functions, via the camper control new mini kitchen broadens the versatility of the California Beach. To use it, it is pulled up and out of the side panel between the B- and C-pillar and folded out. The stainless steel unit has a single-hob gas cooker on the left and a worktop on the right. Over the gas cooker there is also a cover plate, which when lifted up for cooking serves as a splashback. If the mini kitchen's hotplate/worktop is not needed, you simply tip it up and lower it back into the side panel, which, incidentally, despite mini kitchen is no wider than its counterpart with no kitchen. Under the hotplate/worktop against the side wall is a large, open storage compartment and an enclosed compartment for the gas bottle. The California is generally used in everyday life like any normal MPV. Often by families. There is then sometimes the need to carry more than four or five people. For such situations Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles offers individual seats on the second seating row. Despite the fitted kitchen, the new California Beach provides room here to use not just one, but two individual seats. With the mini kitchen closed, the bench seat and individual seats can be repositioned without any restrictions at all. Depending on bench seat version on the third row, the camper thus becomes a six- or seven-seat MPV. Note, however, that any Beach with type approval as a motorhome has a maximum of five seats. Anyone wanting to use the Beach with mini kitchen and six or seven seats should therefore simply order it as the Tour version with passenger car type approval rather than as the Camper, choose not to have the left sliding door and add the mini kitchen. The compact design of the variable kitchen underlines the fact that the California is more than ever the true all-rounder in the compact motorhome market. View 68 photos. One of the most appealing things about the California is just how cleverly VW integrates the campervan features. There are cupboards and wardrobes in the back, a two-ring hob (with integrated storage for a 2.8kg gas bottle), 42-litre electric cool box (which can be used to keep things warm as well) and on-board tanks for both
That's not forgetting the scores of vans that came before it - camping in a Volkswagen Transporter goes all the way back to the T1 and iconic 'splittie' campers. If this were sold
